David Marsh, FASA President, Principal
David Marsh’s professional consulting experience in architectural acoustics, environmental noise and audio-video systems spans three decades. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America (FASA) and a past president of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants. He has written extensively for AV industry magazines, presented papers and chaired sessions at professional society meetings and he is a regular seminar instructor at international conferences in the U.S. and Asia. Mr. Marsh’s wide-ranging project history contains hotels including mega-resorts, casinos, convention centers, retail/dining/entertainment (RDE) venues, professional and collegiate sports facilities, theme parks and attractions, museums, visitor centers, performing arts centers, houses of worship, university academic buildings, k-12 schools, healthcare facilities, courthouses, city halls and other government centers, high-rise “spec” office towers and campus-style corporate headquarters, apartment buildings and high- rise luxury condominiums.
Melvin SaundersSenior Consultant
Melvin Saunders’ consulting capabilities consist of architectural acoustics, noise and vibration control for building services, environmental noise assessments and analysis, industrial noise abatement and audio-video system design. He began his consulting career at Pelton Marsh Kinsella (PMK) in Dallas, TX. He then worked for an acoustical contractor as a project manager overseeing the installation of products and observing methods specified by many other acoustical consultants. He also fabricated acoustical finishes and noise abatement products. After returning to PMK for a time, he took a position directing the acoustical consulting division at a one of the largest A/E firms in the U.S. Additionally, Mr. Saunders has designed, installed and programmed residential and commercial audio-video systems. These diverse involvements have enhanced his consulting expertise in terms of product knowledge, practical application, cost estimating assistance and value engineering.
Tim Lindstrom, RCDD, CSI CDTSenior Consultant
Tim Lindstrom worked at a nationwide AV equipment sales company before moving into design-build AV integration for 10 years. From there, he joined Pelton Marsh Kinsella (PMK) in Dallas, TX as a consultant in 1997. During the ensuing decade at PMK, Mr. Lindstrom was certified by BICSI as a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) and by CSI as a Construction Documents Technologist (CDT). He subsequently worked at several other consulting firms before returning in 2013 to contribute his talents once again to the PMK team, now as Marsh/PMK International. His professional experience includes AV and low voltage consulting on hotels and casino resorts, retail/dining/entertainment (RDE) venues, convention/conference centers, professional and collegiate sports facilities, performing arts theatres/showrooms, broadcast facilities, corporate offices, courthouses, city halls and other government buildings.
Dave StearnsSenior Consultant
Dave Stearns’ varied audio-video experience includes system design, installation and operation. His consulting project experience includes hotels, casinos, convention/conference centers, corporate training environments, professional and collegiate sports facilities, performing arts venues, houses of worship, university classrooms, k-12 schools, courthouses, studios, motion picture theaters and sound masking systems for open-plan offices. His formal education combined electrical engineering studies with music theory and his work-related training has included seminars/workshops by Synergetic Audio Concepts and training certifications by manufacturers of digital signal processing and control systems. Mr. Stearns is proficient in the use of electroacoustic modeling software. He has assisted manufactures in the design of custom loudspeaker solutions for project-specific applications which have ultimately become standard products.
Tom Defrange, RCDDSenior Consultant
Tom Defrange is a Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) specializing in voice/data networks and security systems for corporate, government, educational, healthcare, residential, retail, hospitality and public assembly facilities. His background includes a position as a healthcare technology specialist for a multi-discipline engineering firm and a consulting position with a technology infrastructure design firm. Tom leverages his experience to minimize networking costs while maximizing the networking infrastructure lifecycle.
Glenn JohnstonSenior Consultant
Mr. Johnston brings vast experience in the in the high-tech arena through twenty-five years of developing solutions in the voice and data industry. As a senior partner of Stravis Consulting and Vice President of Consulting Services, Glenn’s responsibilities include overseeing the operations of the services division, services development, project management and consulting services in the areas of Security, Telecommunications, Networking, Intelligent Buildings, and Infrastructure Management and Design.

Room Acoustics: The field of room acoustics deals with the behavior of sound in enclosed spaces. For performing arts and worship venues, Marsh/PMK works with architects to develop the appropriate room geometry, surface shaping and finish materials to achieve desirable room acoustic characteristics subjectively described using terms like reverberance, warmth, clarity, loudness and listener envelopment as well as support for musicians on the stage. In conference facilities, classrooms, courtrooms and similar smaller spaces, short reverberation times and avoidance of disturbing echoes are important objectives. Room acoustic design and remedial work in “large rooms” like enclosed sports facilities and transportation terminals present certain challenges in terms of echo control and achievement of adequate speech intelligibility for amplified sound. Marsh/PMK uses acoustical modeling as an aid in the design of room acoustics.

Sound Isolation (for noise control and acoustical privacy): Sound isolation services consist of design and testing in relation to airborne sound transmission between adjacent spaces within buildings as well as impact (structure-borne) sound transmission through floor/ceiling assemblies. Sound separations are critical in performing arts and worship facilities, hotels and multi-party residential construction, classrooms, courtrooms, hospital bed towers and in office buildings to name a few examples. Speech privacy in office buildings is often aided through use of electronic sound masking, which establishes a minimum required level of background noise with a controlled frequency spectrum. Marsh/PMK applies knowledge gained from past projects along with modeling tools, available laboratory test data and state-of-the-art measurement instrumentation in providing services to achieve or assess sound isolation in buildings.

MEP Noise & Vibration Control: Steady-state ambient (background) noise levels in buildings normally result from the ordinary operation of mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems. Noise sources include chillers, pumps, air-handling units, air distribution ductwork, terminal devices, cooling towers, garage fans, transformers/substations, emergency generators and water flow through piping, valves, etc. Marsh/PMK provides noise and vibration control for these systems and components to achieve acceptable levels as established by ASHRAE and ANSI.

Environmental Noise Assessment: Outdoor noise studies may consist of field measurements and analysis using drawings and maps or predictive modeling to determine the impact of existing or planned noise sources on existing or newly planned buildings. One example is the noise impact of aircraft flyovers on a new school being constructed near an existing airport. In addition to the impact of existing environmental noise on buildings, we must also consider new noise being introduced by buildings or developments that can impact nearby communities. Examples of this include construction of amphitheatres, theme parks, bars and restaurants with outdoor patios and open-air stadiums near communities. Marsh/PMK’s environmental noise consulting services include all of the above as well as review of plans for new construction to ensure that garage fans, cooling towers and emergency generators will meet local noise code requirements at the property line.

Sound Reinforcement Systems: An ideal sound reinforcement design covers an audience with amplified sound in a manner that provides uniform loudness, good speech intelligibility, musical clarity, natural tonal quality and proper localization to the natural acoustic sources. Marsh/PMK has provided sound system designs for hundreds of facilities including theatres for performing arts, worship centers, sports facilities, hotels, convention centers, courtrooms, city council chambers, university lecture halls, nightclubs, casinos and theme parks.

Audio-Video Presentation Systems: The basic function of an AV presentation system is to display images, reproduce the associated audio and provide user-friendly media control. However, the capabilities of modern AV systems go far beyond this description. System designers must keep abreast of rapidly changing technologies in networked AV, digital audio signal processing platforms, flat-panel displays, new projection engines and optics, control system advancements and much more. Our team has extensive experience designing AV presentation systems for corporate boardrooms, conference rooms and training facilities, hotel meeting spaces, courtrooms, government centers and university academic buildings.

Video Boards, Video Walls & Digital Signage: Procurement of scoreboards, large format LED boards, “ribbon displays” and even ordinary digital signage is often a vendor-driven – i.e., without a fair basis for competitive pricing. Marsh/PMK can assist building owners in “leveling the playing field” through a variety of services from programming the technical performance requirements and writing RFPs to complete system design. Our firm has designed digital signage, scoreboards, video boards, video replay and scoreboard control for both professional and collegiate sports facilities. We’ve also designed digital signage systems for many non-sports applications including retail mall way-finding, hotel meeting room scheduling, casino promotions, food outlet menu boards and courthouse digital docketing.

Production Facilities & Systems: Over the years, we have provided broadcast-related consulting for commercial and public access radio and television studios, business television and medical training facilities, performing arts venues, convention centers, city and county government facilities, courthouses and sports facilities. This experience ranges from simple broadcast infrastructure to fixed cabling design to the design of in-house production/post-production systems.

Before AV-IT convergence was even a catch-phrase, consultants at PMK were implementing a networked audio design on a grand scale for the 2002 opening of the Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center near Orlando, FL. Networked audio and video is now common, even necessary for large systems that have equipment racks distributed throughout a building or an entire campus. AV is becoming significantly more dependent on network resources and more integrated with the IT environment. This leads to shared equipment spaces and cabling pathways. In order to gain the greatest design efficiencies and to improve interdisciplinary coordination, Marsh/PMK offers low voltage consulting as an add-on service to our AV scope through strategic subcontract partnerships.
*Note: What is defined as a low voltage system by the National Electric Code in the U.S. is considered in many other countries to be an “extra-low voltage” (ELV) system as defined by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). These include structured cabling systems serving voice and data networks as well as security systems providing video surveillance, building access control and intrusion detection.
Jerrold Stevens, Senior Consultant
Jerrold Stevens brings a multifaceted AV industry background to Marsh/PMK International. He worked on the manufacturing side, first as an independent sales representative and later as Director of Support and Education for a premier pro-audio loudspeaker manufacturer. He was a system designer for a national AV integration company before becoming an independent design consultant in 2000 at Pelton Marsh Kinsella (PMK). Jerrold’s experience at PMK in Dallas, TX and later at PMK International in Dubai, UAE includes AV system design for buildings across the U.S. and from the Middle East to Asia. These include hotels and casino resorts, convention/expo centers, performing arts venues, worship centers, sports facilities and universities. Jerrold has significantly contributed to industry education starting with sound system design seminars at NSCA Expo 2001 and continuing at InfoComm Expos. He joined the InfoComm University Adjunct Faculty in 2008. He’s taught at Integrated Systems Expos in Amsterdam and Singapore and at PALME Shows in Dubai and Singapore. He’s written magazine articles for Sound & Communications, Live Sound International and ProAV Magazine.
Bennett Brooks PE, FASA, INCE
Senior Consultant
Bennett Brooks says, “Environments should provide a sonic dimension that promotes a sense of well-being.” His engineered acoustical designs have been proven through rigorous testing. These include the creation of pleasing sound environments and noise control solutions for applications ranging from concert halls and theaters, schools and universities, hospitals and healthcare, houses of worship, commercial offices, recording and broadcast studios, restaurants, banquet and entertainment facilities, hotels, resorts and residences, to factories and power plants. Project interests include architecture, community noise, soundscapes and music production. As an internationally recognized authority on acoustics, Mr. Brooks is active in standards development organizations and frequently publishes and presents his findings in a variety of forums, including peer reviewed journals. He is a licensed Professional Engineer, Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America, Member of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, and Past President of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants.
Bryan Simpson
Director of Business Development
Bryan Simpson’s 25+ years of experience in audiovisual design and integration spans virtually all commercial market sectors with a concentration in hospitality, gaming and entertainment. He has worked on numerous “mega” casino resorts and large public assembly spaces including sports facilities, theatres/showrooms and worship facilities. At Marsh/PMK, Bryan devises new business development strategies, forges new client relationships, cultivates existing relationships and secures new business for the firm. His background in AV system integration, project management and design further enables him to serve in the capacity of a contract manager for AV projects. This role includes managing project delivery, assessing system requirements, writing design narratives and developing the system cost estimates.
Cleve Doyen, Consultant
After serving in the U.S. Marines for nine years, Cleve Doyen spent most of the following decade working for major manufacturers of HVAC products where his focus became noise and vibration control product development. For one of these companies, he developed the initial version of software used in applying noise control products to specific project requirements. As an acoustical consultant at Marsh/PMK International, Cleve provides acoustical design evaluations and measurements for noise control, architectural acoustics and environmental noise projects.
